Fish Ecology
In collaboration with DPIRD Fisheries Scientists, we undertake regular monitoring and stock assessments of fish species that are both commercially and culturally important to our local community.
Our long-term project focused on Barndi/black bream has generated a wealth of data and information on the size, age, and sex ratio of Barndi within the Benwenerup Estuary (Stokes National Park). During these surveys, our Rangers also complete various water quality measurements, such as pH and salinity, and collect marine debris. Our debris surveys follow a rigorous and established protocol, providing long-term data for the same location.
Using this data and the tissue samples we collect from the Barndi, we are now investigating the amount of microplastics and plastic-associated chemicals found in the Barndi from this same area. Our Rangers are excited to be involved in such innovative science, and to be co-authoring research papers based on their hard work and the partnerships we've built.
