Southern Ports

Southern Ports is the custodian of the three 'gateway' ports of Albany, Bunbury and Esperance. The Esperance Port is the deepest in southern Australia with 200 ships and 11 million tonnes of trade passing through each year. The Port is a vital trade hub connecting key industries in regional WA with the rest of the world.

Southern Ports is located in the cultural precinct of Taananeditj ('where you climb to see over') being an Esperance Nyungar place of storytelling, hunting, camping, harvesting native plant foods, tool making and fishing. Cultural artefacts can still be found in the area today.

Located within the Port itself is the final resting place of the respected Aboriginal tracker and guide for the Forrest brothers – Windiitj (Tommy Windich). This culturally and historically important place is now a registered site under the Aboriginal Heritage Act (WA).

Our partnership with Southern Ports has evolved from collaborating on the protection of cultural heritage to the delivery of a variety of land enterprises services from garden development, weed control, firebreak maintenance and site rehabilitation. These collaborations provide a critical pathway for our staff to participate in commercial enterprise whilst delivering essential, locally driven, value-for-money services to the Port.

Our partnership with Southern Ports demonstrates how community-wide benefits can be achieved when two organisations who share common values work together for mutual benefit.

Projects

Most recently, Southern Ports and ETNTAC collaborated on the rehabilitation of large area within the precinct. Previously infested with invasive species and posing a danger to the Port’s operations due to erosion of the steeply sloping site, ETNTAC worked with other local contractors to stabilise the area and planted approximately 30,000 native seedlings, which has significantly improved the biodiversity of the area.
